My Grandpa is 87 years old, and very set in his ways. He's always been under the mentality that an animal, especially a dog or a child won't listen to you or respect you unless you beat it into doing so. He's abused dogs by kicking them, hitting them, whipping them regardless of size and also did this to my mom and her brother when they were little as well. Now, he's too old to do more than kick around my grandma's poodle when she barks too much. So whats so amazing? Recently, he had a brush with prostate cancer. Yesterday he got out of surgery for it. Also yesterday we got an old dog, a 12 year old Sheppard mutt. The last dog we got, a tiny Pomeranian, he threw one of it's toys at it's head.
"Hey you hit the dog," said my mom,
"Let it hit the damn dog, you don't need another damn animal anyway." was his reply.
Well today as he was talking to my mom about the old Sheppard, it was a completely different conversation.
"Maybe we can set a place up for him in the barn, or get him a dog house er somethin', I just hate to see him layin' out there on the ground like that in the wind and cold and all. I sorta feel bad for him that's all."
I was astonished. It's amazing how someone like my grandpa, a person like that could suddenly change his ways and care about an animal he's never met in so little time. Him? Feel bad for an animal? This coming from the guy who wouldn't think any less of shooting a dog on sight or kicking it off the porch? It's amazing how a brush with cancer can change someone isn't it?
Just thought I'd share that with you all.
